> New Poll Shows Public Support for Energy & Climate Change Bill

When Zogby International asked over 1,000 likely voters between July 31st and August 4th if they favored the American Clean Energy and Security Act, 71 percent responded affirmatively.

Both the Washington Post and Zogby polls found that Americans overwhelmingly (nearly 2-to-1 advantage in both polls) understand energy and climate legislation will create jobs.

The House passed the American Clean Energy and Security Act in June, and the Senate is expected to vote on cap and trade legislation this fall.

How to Get Involved

As Congress prepares to return to Washington after the August recess, now is the time to contact Senators Jim Webb and Mark Warner and ask for their support on cap and trade. Tell them that we have an historic opportunity to cap global warming pollution and put people back to work unleashing America's green energy economy.

Town Hall Meeting - This Thursday!

Senator Warner will be in Fredericksburg this Thursday, September 3rd. Come voice your support for a cap on carbon, and a clean energy future for Virginia!

> Green Energy in Practice: Wind Energy on Prince Edward Island

While traveling recently, VCI Field Director Peter DuMont had a firsthand glimpse at one of the newest wind farms in North America. Consisting of 10 Vestas M-90 wind turbines, the Eastern Kings Wind Farm is located on the eastern shore of Prince Edward Island, Canada.

Until recently the island's population of 140,000 had to import all needed electricity. Recognizing an opportunity to harvest the renewable wind resources on the island, the PEI provincial Department of Environment, Energy and Forestry spent $47 million dollars (all figures Canadian) in 2007 to construct the wind farm. Within three months of completion, the wind farm had generated $1 million dollars in revenue, with projections of $8 million dollars in annual revenue, and a yearly displacement of 70,000 tons of greenhouse gases. Eastern Kings now provides for 7.5% of PEI's electric power, enough for 12,000 homes.

Construction has now begun on a Virginia wind farm in Highland County, and research continues on the manufacturing and placement of wind turbines in eastern Virginia, which could generate 8,000 jobs in the Commonwealth.

"Examples like the Eastern Kings wind farm make a powerful argument," said Mr. DuMont, "that whether in the Blue Ridge Mountains or along the Atlantic shore, wind energy can be an important part of job growth and a cleaner energy future for Virginia."
